Who Americans Spend Time With

An interactive analysis of how Americans spend their awake hours, showing how social time shifts across life stages.

About the Story

How you spend your time changes more than you think as you get older. This analysis looks at daily time use across age groups, tracking who you spend time with and how those patterns shift over a lifetime.

The data comes from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. A few things stand out clearly. Time spent alone increases steadily as you age and time with family declines. One upside though: you spend less time with coworkers the older you get.

Why Vizzu?

Vizzu shows these shifts as a continuous visual flow, so you see one type of interaction give way to another over time. You can watch the full progression or stop at any point to examine a specific moment. A simple dataset becomes a window into how social life actually changes across a lifetime.
